Govt. notification  evokes mixed reactions

Staff Reporter

ITANAGAR, Oct 01: The government of Arunachal in a gazette notification issued in January this year had fixed minimum educational qualification of graduation/bachelor degree from a recognized university for considering appointment to group-B and group-A posts/services either by direct recruitment or on promotion with immediate effect. Even though some of the departments have implemented it but most have not. The inordinate delay in implementation is causing heart burn to many govt. officials.

It is believed that this decision of government has riled those employees who are on the verge of promotion courtesy seniority in service though they don’t have requisite educational qualification.  The order has sharply divided the govt. employees and it is believed that huge internal lobby is going to revoke the order.

“Present government headed by Chief Minister Nabam Tuki took a bold decision by fixing the basic educational qualification. This is a powerful step towards brighter Arunachal. We are hopeful that government will not buckle under pressure from any group/individual and kids and kins of powerful people. They should ensure implementation of Gazette notification at the earliest,” shared one govt. official. He went on to add, “The tag of the “land of Kushi-Kushi" given to Arunachal decades ago should not be applied in today's technologically advanced society. State government should no way consider the demand for withdrawal of order passed by them just few months back. Let "Darwin's theory of Survival of the fittest" be applied and those unable to adapt the changing environment should be routed out.”

As temperature rises, species move to higher altitudes

Rising temperatures are believed to forcing huge untold number of species to move their homes north-ward or climb to higher altitudes, says an alarming study. Global warming and changing rainfall patterns have resulted in shifts or extensions in species' range in every terrain, region and ecosystem in India, the findings showed.  The study which appeared in journal Economic and Political Weekly noted that as the globe warms, species are moving away from rising temperatures to places with temperatures more suited to them.

The most well-known example of species creeping higher could be the case of apples in Himachal Pradesh. With fewer days of freezing weather at 1,500 metres, apples are now flourishing only at altitudes of 2,200-3,000 metres, the report read. In Arunachal too the rise in temperature is causing serious geographical and climatic changes. However citizens along with state government do not seem to have learned any lessons. Rampant de-forestation and illegal earth cutting across the state has caused massive demographic changes. Urgent measures should be taken by government to control such illegal act.

Help us better understand

Dear Editor,

I wish that The Arunachal Times, while editing the news items shall take care to publish the full forms of project names instead of using the abbreviated forms.

In the subsequent sentences/paras the shorten/abbreviated forms be used to avoid repeated use of full forms as well as to save space. Now a day abbreviated forms of project names/organisations are used profusely in print media which is quite normal but in the beginning it is advisable always to give the full terms to understand the text/despatch.

NERIST students are suffering

Dear Editor,

It comes as a shock to me that an institute like NERIST has to go through such a difficult phase of time. Personally, I was impressed by NERIST’s excellence in imparting quality education the products of which go ahead and serve in various capacities across the country.

However, the present situation of indefinite strike by NERIST Employees’ Association (NEA) in NERIST is causing harm to the prestigious institute, especially the students. Parents have high expectations from their sons and daughters studying in NERIST. Many of the students’ parents have to manage the fees of their children by taking loans. Seeing such problematic atmosphere, what would the parents expect? Though, I’m not from technical background but it pains to see that the students out there are suffering due to the ongoing agitation. It’s a fundamental right of the students to have their educational institution run uninterrupted. An institute like NERIST should be kept from political propagandas. Whatever or whosoever is responsible for the present crisis deserves condemnation from every section of the society.

I hope the voice raised by Student Union of NERIST (SUN) has reached various student orgs. It is in such distressful time of students that apex student unions like AAPSU must come forward and help eradicate stumbling blocks.

Further, I urge the concerned minister to look into the NEA matter and put immediate stop to its indefinite strike so that the institute is brought back to normal state as has been demanded by the NERIST students.

Good roads are the symbol and lifeline of progress

Dear Editor,

With due respect, through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the department concerned and the state govt. to the bad and unmaintained condition of roads that connects the various places of our state.

Good roads have been one of the prime concerns of the various civilizations and empires that the world has witnessed. It is of course due to the fact that good roads leads to progress and development of a state or a country in every department say it political, social, cultural, economical etc. We can say that good roads are the symbol and lifeline of progress.

Hence, I would like to appeal the concern department and the state govt. to look into the matter, so that our state starts its journey for becoming an ideal state of our nation.

Yours,

Gotum Karlo

It pains to see the shine fading away

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and express my disappointment over suppression of my freedom of expression and a threatening call that I got last night from some unknown person asking me to refrain from publishing my views.

First of all I would like to refer to an article of mine which got published in some of the local newspapers, dated 26/09/2014, of Arunachal Pradesh.

In the article I had expressed my concern over the NERIST crisis brought about by the indefinite strike of NERIST Employees’ Association (NEA). I’m an alumnus of NERIST and having had been a member of SUN executive bodies, I too am well aware of the issues of NEA. Seeing the unbecoming condition of the present NERIST, once were I studied, I had expressed my concern and shared my point of view regarding the NEA matter. And I still adhere to the facts that I know of and refuse to be suppressed in what I feel rightful to express. As per my best knowledge, I remember that our Director left no stone unturned in fulfilling the valid demands kept by NEA, and the remaining issues were beyond the power of the Director to resolve at institute level. As such, demand for the removal of the Director is unfounded and totally out of question! Thus, NEA is unreasonably pursuing the matter to the extent of indefinite strike, only to hamper the students’ curriculum and paralyze the institute’s function. Over the past years, NERIST has suffered enough for want of a regular Director. Removal of the present one will entail the same agony. I spent 7 years of my life in NERIST with great joy and happy stay. There was a feeling of fraternity amongst all the NE states and we all lived in cultural harmony. It’s a sad state of affairs that NERIST at present is subjected to experience heavy setbacks afflicted upon by NEA strikes. NERIST as a whole is prestigious for all the northeastern states and we take pride in having made it through the NEE exams. It pains to see the shine fading away.

Is it so wrong to express our concern over the plight of NERIST? Have we no right to share our view points? Should one be warned from taking the right side? Are the appeals made by students for undisturbed education unjustified? I never expected that I would be threatened for saying what I felt right to. First I received an SMS saying my points were incorrect and that I must keep away from writing like that. Later, through voice call, he went on to ask if I still had dues left to be cleared in NERIST with a tone of warning sort, that I might suffer a loss. The caller didn’t reveal his identity which shows how afraid he is to be busted and therefore how wrong is the organization he is defending.

If NEA is righteous in its stand, why does it not prove itself through proper channel instead of resorting to destructive means of strikes and making threat calls? Now I’m pretty much sure how mislead are NERIST employees in the name of so called NEA. I once again appeal to the authorities concerned to strict-check the legitimacy of the NEA issue and bring an end to the crisis that NERIST is facing once and for all. I also appeal to the people of Arunachal Pradesh, various NGOs, and Student unions, to intervene and save NERIST before it succumbs to the demagoguery of few persons with vested interest.

Yours,

H. Kato Shikhu, Nagaland
